Getting to the Galveston Cruise Port: Your Complete Transportation Guide

How to get to Galveston cruise terminals by car, shuttle, or rental car. Detailed directions, parking options, and transfer costs from Houston.

Getting to the Galveston cruise terminals is straightforward for most travelers, but the details matter. Whether you're driving from across Texas, flying into Houston, or taking a shuttle, here's everything you need to know about reaching the port smoothly and affordably.

Driving to Galveston (Most Common Option)

From Houston (45 minutes): Take I-45 South from downtown Houston directly to Galveston Island. Exit at 61st Street or Broadway depending on which terminal you're heading to (Terminal 1 is accessible via 61st Street; Terminal 2 via Broadway). The critical caveat: traffic on I-45 during Friday and Saturday mornings can be brutal. A normal 45-minute drive can easily stretch to 90 minutes or longer. If you're driving on cruise departure day, leave at least two hours earlier than your GPS suggests.

From Dallas (4.5 hours): I-45 South the entire way. Plan for stops and allow extra time if traveling midday on Fridays when weekend cruisers are headed to Galveston.

From San Antonio (4 hours): Take I-10 East to Houston, then I-45 South to Galveston.

From Austin (3.5 hours): Route through Houston via I-35 South to Houston, then I-45 South.

Parking at the port: On-site garage parking at the cruise terminals is available for $15–20 per day. Book in advance online through the Port of Galveston Wharves website—it's cheaper than paying at the gate and guarantees a spot. Off-site parking with shuttle service (operated by companies like EZcruise Parking, Park N Cruise, and Lighthouse Parking) costs $9–12 per day and is a solid budget option.

Shuttle and Transfer Services from Houston Airports

If you're flying into Houston to catch your cruise, several shuttle companies operate between the airports and Galveston terminals. This is often more affordable and less stressful than renting a car.

Shared shuttle services like eRideshare, Galveston Limo, Island Shuttle Co., and Coastal Transfers operate regular routes. Cost: $35–55 per person one-way for a shared shuttle. Book in advance, especially for early morning departures. Travel time is typically one to one and a half hours depending on traffic and number of stops.

Uber and Lyft are available from both Houston airports to Galveston terminals. Cost: approximately $70–100 each way. More expensive than shared shuttles but offers door-to-door convenience and schedule flexibility.

Cruise line transfers are official services offered directly by Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and others. Typically $40–60 per person. If you're arriving on the same day as your cruise departure and want maximum peace of mind, this is worth the extra cost.

Important timing note: If you're flying into Houston on the same day as your cruise departure, book the earliest flight you can and aim to arrive at the airport by 10 AM at the latest for a noon departure. Houston traffic to Galveston can easily add 90 minutes to your travel time. When possible, arrive the day before.

Renting a Car

Both Houston airports (IAH and HOU) have major rental car companies. Rental cars are an option if you want flexibility and plan to explore Galveston before your cruise or after disembarkation. If you rent a car from Houston airport and drive to Galveston, you'll need to return the car—confirm drop-off availability in Galveston when booking, as options are limited. Enterprise has a Galveston drop-off location.

Once You're in Galveston: Getting Around

Galveston has taxis and Uber/Lyft available for getting around the island. If you're staying at a hotel the night before cruise departure, the hotel usually offers shuttle service to the terminals (confirm this when booking).

Critical Detail: Confirm Your Terminal Before You Travel

The three cruise terminals—Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 25—are located in different areas across the island. They are NOT all in the same location, and arriving at the wrong terminal is a surprisingly common mistake. Before you leave for Galveston, confirm your terminal on your cruise documents or call your cruise line.

Smart Timing and Planning Tips

If driving on embarkation day: Leave significantly earlier than you think necessary. Arriving 45 minutes early is better than arriving 5 minutes late.

If flying same-day: Book the earliest possible flight, arrive by 10 AM for a standard noon departure, and use a cruise line transfer or private car service.

Have emergency numbers saved: Save your cruise line's emergency contact number. If a flight is delayed or traffic is worse than expected, you can call your cruise line immediately for guidance.
