North America

California

Pacific coast, wine country and world-class national parks.

Overview

Why go to California

California packs several trips into one state. The Pacific Coast Highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles is one of the world’s great drives, threading Big Sur’s cliffs, Monterey and Santa Barbara. Wine country — Napa and Sonoma — is an easy, indulgent add-on. Inland, Yosemite, Sequoia and Death Valley deliver jaw-dropping national parks, while the cities (San Francisco, LA, San Diego) anchor the ends. California is also a major cruise gateway: Mexican Riviera and coastal repositioning sailings depart from LA, San Diego and San Francisco.

Best time to visit

September–October is arguably best statewide — warm coast, harvest season in wine country and thinner park crowds. Spring brings wildflowers; summer is peak (and Yosemite’s waterfalls are fullest May–June). Coastal fog (“May Gray/June Gloom”) can linger early summer.

Top attractions

Big Sur & Highway 1

Cliff-hugging coastline, Bixby Bridge and McWay Falls.

Yosemite National Park

Granite giants El Capitan and Half Dome, plus thundering spring waterfalls.

Napa & Sonoma

San Francisco

The Golden Gate, cable cars, Alcatraz and a legendary food scene.

Cruises to California

California ports (Los Angeles/Long Beach, San Diego, San Francisco) launch Mexican Riviera cruises and Pacific Coast/repositioning sailings. Princess and Norwegian are the most active lines from the West Coast.

Travel tips

  • Book Yosemite lodging and any peak-season park reservations months ahead.
  • Drive Highway 1 north-to-south for ocean-side lanes and the best pull-outs.
  • Pack for microclimates — coastal SF is far cooler than inland valleys the same day.

Packing tips

  • Layers always — coastal mornings are cool even in summer.
  • Sturdy shoes for park trails and a daypack with water.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses; the inland and desert sun is intense.

Plan 7–10 days for the classic San Francisco-to-Los Angeles coast with wine country and a park. Add days for Yosemite or a deeper Big Sur stay. We build the routing so drive times stay enjoyable, not exhausting.

Yes — Los Angeles/Long Beach, San Diego and San Francisco launch Mexican Riviera and Pacific Coast cruises, mainly on Princess and Norwegian. It’s a great option to pair a California stay with a cruise, no domestic connection needed.

September–October is a statewide sweet spot: warm coast, wine harvest and lighter crowds. For Yosemite waterfalls, aim for May–June; for beaches, mid-to-late summer once coastal fog lifts.
