Houston Airports Guide for Galveston Cruisers: IAH vs. HOU

Compare George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU) airports for Galveston cruise travel. Distances, transfer costs, and timing tips.

If you're flying into Houston to catch your Galveston cruise, you have two major airports to choose from: George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU). Both serve Galveston cruise travelers, but they differ in distance, airline options, and overall convenience. Understanding the trade-offs helps you choose the airport that fits your travel style.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

Distance from Galveston cruise terminals: 65 miles, approximately 1 hour 20 minutes in light traffic. During rush hour or heavy traffic days, plan for 2+ hours. This is the farther of the two airports.

Pros: IAH is Houston's largest and most international airport. United Airlines operates a major hub here, which translates to excellent flight options from most US cities and competitive pricing. If you're flying from Denver, Chicago, San Francisco, or other major US cities, United hub status at IAH often means direct flights, lower fares, or better schedules.

Cons: The distance and I-45 traffic from IAH to Galveston can be substantial. Houston traffic moves slowly during peak hours. If your flight arrives at 11 AM on a Friday and you have a noon cruise departure, you're looking at a tight, stressful transfer.

Transfer options from IAH: Shared shuttle ($45–55 per person, typically 1.5–2 hours with stops), private car service ($120–180), Uber/Lyft ($85–110), cruise line transfer ($45–60 per person).

Same-day flight timing from IAH: Book the earliest flight possible and aim to land by 10 AM at the latest for a noon departure. Most travel experts recommend flying in the day before if possible.

William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)

Distance from Galveston cruise terminals: 40 miles, approximately 45–60 minutes in light traffic. This is notably closer than IAH and typically faster due to less congested road routes.

Pros: HOU is significantly closer to Galveston, reducing transfer time and stress. Southwest Airlines operates a major operation from HOU—pricing is often competitive, and you get their generous baggage allowance (two free bags). HOU is a smaller, easier airport to navigate: shorter walks, less congestion overall.

Cons: Fewer international connections and fewer airline options than IAH. Some cities are simply better served by IAH.

Transfer options from HOU: Shared shuttle ($35–45 per person, 45 minutes to 1 hour), private car service ($100–150), Uber/Lyft ($65–85).

Same-day flight timing from HOU: HOU is the safer choice due to shorter transfer time. Still, planning a hotel night the day before is the smarter option.

How to Choose Between IAH and HOU

Check available flights for your home city first. Don't pick an airport and then check flights—do it the other way around. Use Google Flights or your preferred booking site to see what's available from both IAH and HOU for your travel dates.

If Southwest serves your route and the timing works, HOU is usually better. Southwest's competitive pricing, generous bags, and HOU's proximity to Galveston make it the smart choice for many domestic travelers.

For international arrivals or complex connections, IAH is the larger hub. If you're flying internationally or connecting from another hub city, IAH's size and options make logistics easier.

Critical Timing Advice for Same-Day Flights

Flying into Houston on the same day as your cruise departure is risky. A 90-minute flight delay becomes a 3+ hour delay when you factor in ground time and traffic to Galveston. Airlines will not hold ships for passengers. Missing your departure can mean losing the entire cruise and the cost of your ticket (though travel insurance may cover it—check your policy).

The smart move: Fly in the day before. Yes, it costs a hotel night ($100–150 typically). But it costs way more to lose an entire cruise. A pre-cruise hotel night is one of the best investments in travel.

If same-day is unavoidable: Fly into HOU (closer to Galveston), book the earliest possible flight, and book a cruise line transfer. Have your cruise line's emergency number saved. Call them immediately if your flight is delayed.

Returning Home After Your Cruise

Many cruise travelers make a mistake on the return leg: booking an early morning flight out of Houston on disembarkation day. Disembarkation can be slow and unpredictable. Book your return flight for early afternoon at the earliest (1 PM or later is better). Give yourself breathing room.
