Los Angeles Airports: Which One to Use for Your Cruise
Which LA airport to fly into for your cruise? Compare LAX, Long Beach (LGB), Santa Ana, Burbank. Best options for each cruise port.
Los Angeles is served by multiple commercial airports, and the airport you choose can significantly impact your cruise day logistics, costs, and stress level. Let me walk you through each option and help you make the right choice based on your home location and cruise terminal.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): The Major Hub
LAX is the primary airport serving the Los Angeles area and one of the world's busiest airports. It's approximately 22 miles from San Pedro and 18 miles from Long Beach cruise terminal.
Pros: LAX offers the widest range of flights and the most airline options. If you're flying transcontinental from the East Coast or internationally from anywhere in the world, LAX almost certainly has your flight. Every major US airline operates from LAX, and virtually every international carrier serves it. You'll find the most departure options and flexibility here.
Cons: LAX is notoriously congested, with a confusing layout that frustrates first-time visitors. The airport has 9 terminals arranged in a horseshoe pattern, and they're not connected to each other—you need to know which terminal your airline uses. Navigating LAX can be chaotic, the rental car center requires a shuttle bus to reach, and overall airport experience is often frustrating. Additionally, ground transportation from LAX (getting to your cruise terminal) requires navigating some of the heaviest traffic in the country.
Terminal Navigation: Know which terminal your airline uses before you arrive. If you're renting a car, you'll need to take a shuttle bus to reach the rental car center, which is off-site. If you're using rideshare, the pickup location is in a separate "LAX-it" zone, adding a few minutes to your process.
To Cruise Port: Budget 45-75 minutes from LAX to either cruise terminal depending on traffic. Morning rush hour (7-9am) should be avoided if possible.
Long Beach Airport (LGB): The Hidden Gem
If you're sailing from the Long Beach cruise terminal (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and others), Long Beach Airport is a game-changer. LGB is only 3 miles from the Long Beach cruise terminal—roughly 10-15 minutes by rideshare depending on traffic.
Served by: Alaska Airlines (with excellent routes from the Pacific Northwest), Delta, American, Southwest. It's not every airline, but major carriers are present.
Pros: Compact, easy to navigate, minimal congestion. You can get from security to baggage claim to rideshare pickup in about 30 minutes without stress. The airport feels human-scaled and manageable. If your airline offers service to LGB, it's dramatically easier than LAX.
Cons: Not every airline serves Long Beach. It's regional service, not global. If you need an airline that doesn't operate from LGB, you won't have a choice.
My recommendation for Carnival/Long Beach cruisers: If your home city has Alaska Airlines service or any of the major carriers serving LGB, book through them if possible. The time and stress savings of avoiding LAX are genuine and substantial. You'll save 30+ minutes on your transfer time, avoid LAX congestion entirely, and navigate a much simpler airport experience.
To Cruise Port: Only $10-15 by rideshare, 10-15 minutes. This is genuinely convenient.
John Wayne Airport / Orange County (SNA): A Secondary Option
Located in Santa Ana (about 35-45 miles from both cruise terminals), John Wayne Airport is smaller than LAX and easier to navigate. Most major US airlines serve it.
Pros: Compact, easier than LAX, less congestion. Serves Orange County residents well.
Cons: Distance from cruise terminals is greater than LAX, adding transfer time. Rideshare from SNA to Long Beach terminal runs $40-60 and takes 40-55 minutes. Not a significant advantage over LAX unless you're an Orange County resident.
When to consider SNA: If you live in Orange County, SNA offers obvious convenience. For anyone else, it's probably not worth the extra distance.
Burbank Bob Hope Airport (BUR): Skip It
Located in Burbank in the San Fernando Valley, approximately 50-60 miles from the cruise terminals, this airport is not practical for cruise embarkation. The distance adds significant time and cost to your transfer. Skip it unless you're already in the San Fernando Valley area.
Practical Airport Selection by Cruise Terminal
If you're sailing from Long Beach (Carnival): Use Long Beach Airport (LGB) if your airline offers service. Period. The convenience advantage is too significant to pass up. If LGB doesn't work for your flights, LAX is your next choice.
If you're sailing from San Pedro (Princess/Norwegian): LAX offers the most airline options and most departure times. SNA is an alternative if you're in Orange County. Both are roughly equivalent distance-wise from San Pedro.
For international flights: LAX is almost certainly your only practical option. It's the gateway for most international connections.
Flying Home After Your Cruise
When disembarking and flying home, timing is crucial. Don't book flights that depart before noon on disembarkation day. One o'clock or later is strongly recommended.
From San Pedro to LAX: Allow 45-90 minutes depending on traffic. Disembarkation morning is unpredictable—even early Sunday mornings, LA traffic can be heavy due to weekend recreational activity.
From Long Beach to LAX: Similar 45-90 minute window.
From Long Beach to LGB: Only 15-20 minutes, which is wonderfully convenient.
Build in buffer time: LA traffic is unpredictable even on non-peak times. Budget generously so you're not racing to your flight.
Maximize Your Cruise Airport Experience
The right airport choice makes your cruise transition seamless. If you have flexibility in your airline booking, look at which airports offer service and choose accordingly. LAX gives you the most options; LGB gives you the most convenience (if it works for your flights). Every minute you save navigating airport congestion and transfers is a minute you're not stressed about your cruise logistics.
