Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport: Your Gateway to Seward Cruises

Fly into Anchorage (ANC) for your Seward Alaska cruise. Complete guide to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport—airlines, ground transportation, timing, and getting to Seward.

By Ben’s Travel 4 min read

If you're cruising from Seward, Alaska, you'll almost certainly fly into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC)—the largest and busiest airport in Alaska, located approximately 127 miles north of Seward. Understanding how ANC works and how to get from the airport to your pre-cruise hotel (and then to Seward) is essential planning for any Alaska cruise traveler.

Airport Overview

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is a modern, well-organized facility with two passenger terminals: the domestic terminal (C and D concourses) and the international terminal. The airport is located within the city of Anchorage, about 5–7 miles from downtown, which translates to roughly 15–20 minutes by rideshare or taxi. The airport is clean, navigable, and much less chaotic than major hub airports like Miami or Atlanta—a welcome contrast after a long travel day.

International connections are available through major carriers including Alaska Airlines (the dominant carrier in Alaska, with more flights in the state than all other airlines combined), Delta, United, American, and seasonally, direct international service from Japan, Korea, and Canada. Most travelers from the continental U.S. arrive in Anchorage via a direct flight or single connection through Seattle, Los Angeles, or another hub city.

Alaska Airlines: The Essential Alaska Carrier

Alaska Airlines deserves special mention for anyone planning an Alaska cruise. The airline operates more Alaskan routes than any other carrier, and its prices for flights within Alaska are competitive. If you're building a land-and-sea package and need to fly between Fairbanks, Anchorage, or other Alaska cities as part of your itinerary, Alaska Airlines will likely be your primary option. Book Alaska Airlines segments at the same time as your cruise and international flights, as summer Alaska fares can rise quickly once cruise season bookings ramp up (typically February–April).

Getting from ANC to Downtown Anchorage

Rideshare (Uber and Lyft) is available at ANC, though service can be less reliable than in major continental cities—Anchorage has a smaller rideshare driver pool. Budget extra time if you're relying on rideshare; typical wait times can be 10–20 minutes. Fares from ANC to downtown hotels run approximately $20–30.

Taxis are available curbside at the terminal and are more reliably available than rideshare at ANC. Several hotel shuttle services also operate from the airport—check with your hotel when booking to confirm whether complimentary airport shuttle service is available.

Flight Timing for Seward Cruise Passengers

Most Alaska cruises departing Seward do so in the late afternoon or early evening. Working backward:

If your ship departs Seward at 5 PM, you need to be at the terminal by 2–3 PM. The Alaska Railroad takes approximately 4 hours from Anchorage to Seward, and trains depart in the morning. This means you need to be in Anchorage the night before your cruise—flying in on embarkation day is extremely risky.

The standard and strongly recommended approach: fly into Anchorage at least two days before your cruise departure. This gives you a day to recover from travel (Alaska is far from most of the U.S.), see some of Anchorage, and then catch the morning train or drive to Seward the following day. Travelers who try to fly in the morning of their cruise embarkation day create a situation where any flight delay cascades into a missed ship—and Alaska Airlines flights from Seattle or Los Angeles can and do experience delays.

International Arrivals

If you're flying internationally into Anchorage, the international terminal has standard U.S. customs and immigration processing. Processing times are generally faster at ANC than at major international hubs simply due to lower volume, but allow 30–60 minutes for customs clearance and factor this into your overall travel timeline.

ANC Amenities

The airport has several restaurants, a coffee shop, retail stores, and a small selection of shops in the secure concourse area. There's a notable collection of Alaskan wildlife taxidermy and art displays throughout the terminal—many travelers find the airport itself an introduction to Alaska's character. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout both terminals. Several hotels are located close to the airport (within 10–15 minutes) for travelers with very early departures or late arrivals who don't want to travel downtown.

Flying Home from ANC After Your Cruise

Most Alaska cruises ending in Seward will connect passengers back to Anchorage via Alaska Railroad or motorcoach on disembarkation day. The return journey from Seward to Anchorage takes approximately 3–4 hours. If you're flying home the same day you disembark, book afternoon or evening flights—ideally departing ANC no earlier than 4 PM. Mid-afternoon or early evening departures give you realistic, relaxed timing. Flying the day after disembarkation eliminates timing pressure entirely and allows you one more night in Anchorage.
