Getting to the Seward Cruise Port: Your Transportation Guide

How to get to Seward's cruise port from Anchorage. Alaska Railroad dome car options, driving the Seward Highway, motorcoach transfers, and what to expect on embarkation day.

By Ben’s Travel 3 min read

Getting to Seward for your Alaska cruise is part of the adventure—and that's not marketing language. The 127-mile journey from Anchorage to Seward is genuinely beautiful, and the options for making that journey are more interesting than a typical airport-to-port taxi ride. Here's everything you need to know.

Option 1: The Alaska Railroad (Highly Recommended)

The Alaska Railroad operates a daily summer service between Anchorage and Seward, departing Anchorage in the morning and arriving in Seward approximately 4 hours later. The route travels through Turnagain Arm (where tides create dramatic mudflat scenery and beluga whales are occasionally spotted), then climbs into the Kenai Mountains, passing glaciers, gorges, and wilderness terrain that is absolutely spectacular.

Holland America and Princess Cruises operate their own glass-domed railcars on Alaska Railroad tracks. These dome cars—with 360-degree glass viewing areas—are a signature Alaska experience and worth booking even if your cruise line doesn't include them by default. The panoramic views from a dome car are genuinely superior to window seats on a regular train car. If you're arriving independently (not on a cruise line land package), you can book standard Alaska Railroad service through alaskarailroad.com. If you're on a Princess or Holland America land package, the dome car transfer is typically included.

Anchorage depot address: 411 W 1st Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. The station is organized and well-staffed.

Option 2: Driving the Seward Highway

If you're comfortable with driving and want maximum flexibility, renting a car in Anchorage and driving to Seward is excellent. The Seward Highway (Alaska Route 1 to Route 9) is widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the United States—it runs along Turnagain Arm with views of the water, mountains, and glaciers, then climbs over a mountain pass and descends through the Kenai Peninsula to Seward. The drive is approximately 2.5 hours under normal conditions. Budget 3–3.5 hours if you plan to stop for photos, which you absolutely will.

Important considerations for driving: the highway has sections of narrow road with steep terrain, and wildlife (moose, Dall sheep, bears) are present. Drive alertly and follow posted speed limits. Also note that you'll need to arrange parking in Seward for the duration of your cruise—options are limited in town. Returning your rental car in Anchorage before the train is another option; check with your rental company for one-way drop-off availability.

Option 3: Motorcoach Transfers

Cruise line motorcoach transfers from Anchorage to Seward are available through most major cruise operators. These are comfortable coaches with luggage handling, narration in some cases, and a direct route to the cruise terminal. Motorcoach transfers are a good option if you prefer not to drive and the Alaska Railroad departure time doesn't align with your schedule. Cost is typically $60–90 per person. Book through your cruise line when finalizing your booking.

Option 4: Independent Shuttle Services

Several independent transportation companies operate Anchorage-to-Seward shuttles during cruise season. These are generally less expensive than cruise line transfers and operate on schedules designed around ship departures. Pricing is approximately $45–70 per person. Search for "Anchorage to Seward shuttle" to find current operators—services change seasonally.

From Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport to Your Anchorage Hotel (or Directly to Seward)

If you're flying into Anchorage (the standard approach), rideshare and taxi service from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport to downtown Anchorage hotels costs approximately $25–35 and takes 15–20 minutes. Most travelers spend at least one night in Anchorage before heading to Seward. If your schedule is tight and you're arriving close to embarkation day, confirm that you have sufficient time to overnight in Anchorage and still make your morning transfer or train to Seward.

Timing Considerations

Alaska cruise ships departing Seward typically sail in the late afternoon or early evening. The Alaska Railroad morning departure from Anchorage arrives in Seward with ample time before sailing. If driving, a morning departure from Anchorage (8–9 AM) gives you time to arrive in Seward, check into your hotel if you're staying the night before, and explore a bit before boarding. Embarkation typically begins 3–4 hours before sailing, so knowing your ship's departure time and working backward is the best planning approach.
