Rocky Mountain grandeur, storybook Maritimes and fall-foliage coasts.

Overview

Why go to Canada

Canada is enormous and gloriously varied. Out west, the Canadian Rockies deliver postcard perfection — Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper — best explored by car or the storied Rocky Mountaineer rail. Out east, the Maritimes and Québec offer French-inflected culture, lobster suppers, Bay of Fundy tides and the Cabot Trail. In autumn, Canada/New England cruises trace the coast from Boston or New York to Halifax, Saint John and Québec City beneath blazing fall foliage. Canada also serves as the northern gateway to Alaska, with many Inside Passage cruises departing Vancouver.

Best time to visit

Summer (June–August) for the Rockies and hiking; September–October for Canada/New England fall-foliage cruises and crisp, colorful days. Winter draws skiers to Banff and Whistler and offers the Northern Lights up north.

Top attractions

Banff & Lake Louise

Glacier-fed turquoise lakes ringed by the Rockies; hike, canoe and ride the gondola.

Québec City

A walled Old Town so European it feels transported from France.

The Cabot Trail (Nova Scotia)

One of the world’s great coastal drives around Cape Breton.

Butchart Gardens (Victoria)

World-famous gardens, a favorite stop on many Alaska sailings from Vancouver.

Cruises to Canada

Canada/New England cruises sail from Boston, New York and Québec each fall (Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity, Princess). Many Alaska cruises embark from Vancouver, and some include Victoria — so a Canada trip often overlaps with Alaska planning.

Travel tips

  • Distances out west are vast — plan realistic drive times between Banff, Jasper and the parks.
  • Book fall-foliage cruises early; peak color weeks (late Sept–mid Oct) sell out first.
  • Carry a passport for every Canada cruise, and check that any Rockies park passes are pre-purchased.

Packing tips

  • Layers for big day-to-night temperature swings, even in summer.
  • A warm jacket and gloves for shoulder-season cruises and mountain mornings.
  • Sturdy hiking shoes for the Rockies and bug spray for lakeside trails.

Canada travel FAQs

Late September through mid-October is peak color, sailing from Boston, New York or Québec to ports like Bar Harbor, Halifax and Saint John. These sell out early — we recommend booking 9–12 months ahead for the best cabins and prices.

Yes — US citizens need a valid passport to enter Canada by air, and we recommend one for every cruise that calls in Canada. Make sure it’s valid for the duration of your trip.

Very much so. Many Inside Passage Alaska cruises depart Vancouver, and some include Victoria, BC. Travelers often add a few days in Vancouver or the Rockies before or after their Alaska sailing.
